Day 13. Le Grand Bornand & The Alps

July 22

Ahhhh. The day before was spent hiking up a mountain then standing on it for hours to watch the Tour de France time trial. As if that weren’t enough, we then had to deal with a traffic and crazy roads through the Alps to get to the ski resort town of Le Grand Bornand – site of the next day’s Tour finish. The drive took FOREVER, but it was through perhaps the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Once we got to the chalet, the place was nearly shut down for the night, but the proprietor appeared and after much confusion and discussion, we finally got our room. The we paid 50 bucks for some crappy french fries and eggs (the only food they were willing to cook for us. Sleepy Alpine villages are a bit different from the cities, trust me.)

Anyway, the next morning we awoke to perfection. We sat on our balcony forever and then toured the stunning town. We didn’t stick around for the finish of the day’s stage though, as Hoang wasn’t into it two days in a row and Geneva beckoned – let’s face it, that’s more her kind of town anyway.

This is the Col de la Colombiere, a rather famous Tour climb. Stunning.
