End of Days/Moonbeam Imperial Stout

End of Days/Moonbeam Stout
1 draught 12oz tulip, $3.75, 8.1% ABV

Purchased at Cambridge House Brew Pub, Granby

[From what I gather, the "End of Days" is the same as their "Moonbeam Stout" and the renaming is a result of the release date. This was confirmed further when CHB called it Moonbeam on their Facebook page.]

end ofWhile not unique to name your high-ABV beer something apocalyptic, I have to give Cambridge House big props for releasing their End of Days Russian Imperial Stout on 12/21/12.

Of course, if you happen to be reading this at any point, say, a few months beyond 12/21/12, you’ve surely forgotten how some idiots bought into the idea that the ancient Mayan calendar had some effect on our world’s worthiness. (The world was to end on 12/21/12).

It didn’t.

And, thankfully as a result of the sun continuing to rise every day, we can all get up to Granby to enjoy this Russian imperial stout.

CHB Says:

Aged in Jim Beam barrels for 3 months, this Russian Imperial Stout starts off dry and oaken before the tannic tartness sets in. Low carbonation. A beer more complex than that girl you dated in high school.

Well, Corona might qualify for that last bit as my high school girlfriend was a smart blond who pretty much focused only on her grades. (Though as a pathologist at John’s Hopkins, 2 Wesleyan degrees and a PhD and an MD from Yale, I guess she had it figured out.) But still, she was boring.

Anyway, this is a good beer. There aren’t too many imperial stouts brewed in Connecticut, and it’s such a great style… Making the trek up to Granby might actually be worth it for this one.

What’s weird about it is that there is alcohol and floral on the nose, but they’ve hidden the booze burn really well. I went through the tasting again half way through, as it warmed a bit, and yeah – still gives off a boozy smell. I can name 10 beers that have the opposite characteristic.

Incidentally, one of my favorite beers in the world is La Fin du Monde from Quebec – which of course means, “The end of the world.”

Which means nothing.
