porterDo you care what type of beer you drink when? I’m not talking seasonals necessarily, but “rules” like “Scotch ale only on dreary chilly days.” Or, “imperial stouts only in winter.” Or, “watery Corona only on hot summer days.”

And, “porters only in the fall.” Do you do that? Why or why not? Personally, I don’t really… although I really can’t imagine gunning down Coronas while shoveling. Though I guess I wouldn’t be too averse to it, if only for hydration purposes.

I like a good porter whatever the calendar says, and Cambridge House has given me one. In November, yeah, but I’ll take it. I’ll take it “right off the rack.”

A creative blend of malts resulting in a mouthful of chocolate, coffee and roasted flavor.

Why would I say “right off the rack?” Because of “prêt-à-porter” of course. Duh. This porter is sort of prêt-à-porter – although claimed to be a “creative blend,” it’s really not. It’s a fairly standard porter, and that’s perfectly fine. I rather enjoy a well-crafted standard porter.

alexander_mcqueen_spring_summer_2012_ready-to-wear-pret-a-porterJust as I enjoy a well-crafted “standard” prêt-à-porter garment. According to a (sourced!) sentence on Wikipedia, “military uniforms were the first ready-to-wear garments to be mass-produced during the War of 1812.” Is that true? I have no idea. The linked source is through JSTOR which means I can’t access it. And it’s some art/fashion textbook. Let’s roll with it.

Prêt-à-porter is the term for factory-made clothing, sold in finished condition, in standardized sizes, as distinct from made to measure or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular person’s frame. I knew all that, but I the term “bespoke” is totally new to me. Bespoke is a British English word that means a clothing item made to a buyer’s specification; that is, personalised or tailored. Hm. Perhaps the reason I’ve never heard of it is because I’ve never owned anything bespoke before.

Who cares, right? I don’t and you don’t. So why have I gone down this tangent? Because I also learned today that the original movie poster for Robert Altman’s movie “Prêt-à-porter” has naked boobs on it. “Off the rack” indeed.

Indeed.
