Copper Hill Kolsch

CHB Copper Hill Kolsch
1 draught pint, $3.75, 5.1% ABV

Purchased at Cambridge House Brew Pub, Granby

kolschLike several CHB beers, it appears this one has been called Copper Hill Kolsch and just regular old Kolsch. Furthermore, the ABV seems to be different from time to time.

Which I only mention because the kolsch is arguably CHB’s more famous and well-regarded beer. It has won a ton of awards over the years and even my beer-geek brother-in-law, who lives in Delaware, knew about the kolsch from Granby. Perhaps the most telling thing about the kolsch is that it’s almost always on tap. Like, probably 330 days out of the year.

No other beer comes close to being as available.

CBH says:

Award-winning German style light ale, smooth easy drinking with subtle noble hop character. Spritzy and refreshing.

Which brings me to the part where I admit that I don’t get it. I do not like the kolsch. I remember 10 years ago (or so) going to Cambridge House and eagerly ordering the kolsch because, well, because it was THEIR KOLSCH.

This was well before I knew that I hated kolsch. I even hate the word. Kolsch kolsch kolsch. Now you do too.

Kolsch kolsch kolsch.

Now, if you’re psychotic and read all these beer reviews and happen to come across my (as yet unwritten) review of Relic’s kolsch, you’ll remember this and be confused. I really, really liked Relic’s kolsch. But Mark from Relic amps up classic styles and makes them different.

CHB sticks to the most classic of classic recipes. So, if you like kolsch, this is great kolsch.

But to me, kolsch is one of the most boring and blah styles there is.

Overall Rating: D
Rating vs. Similar style: B
