Double D Scotch Ale

Double D Scotch Ale
12 oz glass, $3.75, 8.5% ABV

Purchased at Cambridge House Brew Pub, Granby

ddThe most amazing thing you’ll learn today, if you’re a 40 to 50-something white male and you know the song is: That Led Zeppelin song where Robert Plant says “Double D” over and over is called Darlene and he’s not saying “double D” but rather, “Darlene.” That makes 25 years of me misunderstanding those lyrics.

And at first, I misunderstood why this Scotch ale was called “Double D.” I couldn’t figure it out – and you readers of these pages surely know how I like to figure this stuff out – but at least it afforded me the chance to reflect upon big boobs.

Or just boobs.

I like ‘em well enough and have been fortunate enough in my life to have enjoyed all shapes and sizes. It’s no secret that I am more-than-happily married to a beautiful woman who does not have double D’s. And I love what she does have.

Which leads me to a story, but let’s take a sip of this beer first.

CHB Says:

Smooth caramel flavor with a smokey peat follow-through. This was the CHB Homebrew competition winner.

I didn’t know it was a home brewer recipe until I was writing this page. What’s funny about that is that while I was drinking it, I said to myself, “this is a bit of a departure from typical CHB beers.” I like being right… probably because it’s so rare.

hAnyway, back to boobs. When my wife Hoang and I were finishing up our (2003) honeymoon in Honolulu (after 2 weeks in Kauai and on the big island), we spent a very surreal, very weird night at the W Hotel bar. After scoring free drinks from some weird rich guys, whom I thought were probably drug dealers and seemed impressed that we were from “near New York,” we took a cab back to our hotel.

[This picture of Hoang isn't from our honeymoon or from Kauai, the Big Island or Oahu - it's from Maui a few years later on a different trip, but I love this picture and I have it on my hard drive so there you go.]

The cabbie was weirder than the guys at the club. Conspiracy this, Jesus that… and then all of the sudden he starts talking about the Internet and chat rooms. He asked us if we ever frequented them, not that our negative answer mattered. He then launched into a discussion of some of his favorite chat rooms, which focused on one in particular called, “Little tiny A-cups.”

Great.

He then went on to suggest someone start littletinyacups.com. Surprisingly, no such website exists with that URL today. So yeah, that was a weird ending to our honeymoon.

I have other stories, more about big boobs, but hey… no need for that stuff here.

Because here, we’re talking about this stellar Scotch Ale. I rather liked it; it didn’t have that cloying sweetness some Scotch ales have – not at all. It went much heavier on the peat and malt than many of this style. At 8.5%, the booziness was well hidden – again, way better than most Scotch ales.

But, sigh, okay… here’s what most people coming to this page are looking for:

Oh yeah, The “Double D” of the name? It’s actually from the 2012 CT Beer Trail and CBH Homebrew competition winner Dennis Decker who provided the recipe. I doubt he looks like the above picture.

Overall Rating: B+
