Midnight Oil Oatmeal Stout

Midnight Oil Oatmeal Stout
1 growlette, $7?, 6% ABV

Purchased at the brewery, Stonington

stoutI just published my review of Beer’d’s Vegemite Sandwich DIPA, which of course included the obligatory Men at Work reference. And now here I am, beginning another Beer’d review of a beer with another obvious Australian band reference.

Seriously, what’s up with that, Beer’d? I guess I should have seen it coming, since every time I visit the brewery, the place is a Crowded House, with INXS of 30 people crammed inside. I have to watch my kids closely, to be sure they aren’t sticking things into the AC/DC wall sockets while I wait for my growlers in a comfortable Silverchair.

As I sat, I figured the female half of the Beer’d duo, Precious, was in charge of the music selection as it seemed Divinyls, Natalie Imbruglia, and Kylie Minogue were in heavy rotation. (Note, it was pre-tarted up Imbruglia. I thought that important.)

Did you know the Little River Band was Australian? I sure didn’t. Not that I ever thought about the Little River Band in my life before this very minute.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway, who doesn’t love a well-made oatmeal stout? Especially one with a few goodies tossed into the mix? Beer’d nailed this one with… oh, who cares what I have to say, I’ll let them say it themselves:

Beer’d Says:

A meal in a glass. Flaked oats for body and mouthfeel supported by flavors of espresso, baker’s chocolate and caramel sweetness.

the-wigglesI’ve recently come around to the term, “mouthfeel,” but only as it relates to these smooth, velvety brews with flaked oats and oat malts. I’ve become a “mouthfeel” believer! I like when my mouth feels mouthfeely.

The Midnight Oil wasn’t as velvety and creamy as some other beers I’ve had recently; ones that have used tons of oat malt. But it was still quite rich and delicious. I didn’t really get any coffee on the nose or the palate, but the bitter chocolate and caramel sweetness was definitely there.

And that was enough, really, as too much espresso would have muddled the final product I think.

For a brewery that specializes in DIPAs and IPAs and APAs and of course their flagship Wit, Beer’d adventure into stouts was noteworthy. And impressive. It’s as if Aaren and Precious decided to take a trip down under.. to the other side of their proverbial beer world, where marsupials reign and the snakes are venomous.

And anyplace that could have spawned The Wiggles is a deep, dark place. As deep and dark as the Midnight Oil Oatmeal Stout.
